I am working on my first build comming along faily well I think with some great help from those on the site I have been reading alot about browning and rust blueing (which is browning that got boiled best i can tell)
and yes I am trying to be period correct to a point kinda building a cross of a full stock hawkens and a kuntucky long rifle
now I see most here lean to the browned finish but what about a blackened finish???
and here is my idea as a long time trapper. but after I rust the parts and I am ready to boil them for blueing what about adding logerwood trap dye to the water and give it a deep flat black color what do you think?

don't know about logerwood trap dye, but if you're using LMF rust browning, when you boil it, it's gonna end up pretty darn near black.
way more black than blue.
at least mine was. :hatsoff:
show us some pics !

well that is good to know I do plan to use the
lmf when I brown it

as for pics of what I have done so far I will have to fig out how to load pics on this site
then I can put some up I basicaly have completed the barrel fitted the breach installed the under lugs and cut in the dove tails for the sights

ya gotta load your pics up on Photobucket - its free to open an account.
Then you can go to the "Using the Forum" section here, from the root directory of Forum topics, and Claude tells how to link your Photobucket photos when you are typing a post here.
It all sounds harder than it really is.
:hatsoff:

Not sure where you are in the build, you said it was coming along fairly well. Some of the more experianced builders may have a differant approach, but I think browning /blueing etc. of the metal parts would be one of your last steps in the project,if not ,you'll most likely ding it up throughout the rest of the project. If your at that point, well then, nevermind

no not at that point yet I have a long way to go and won't finish the barrel for some time just tossing an idea while I am waiting for more parts

I have used Lee Express Blue (put on hot and boiled)and it is as close to black as you can get. It is also one of the toughtest finishes I have ever seen.
