Buffalo Bill Commemorative coin

It's been a long search for this coin. It is from Buffalo Bill Days in 1969 in Leavenworth, Kansas.

I have been wanting to build a rifle with this coin embedded in the stock and we finally located it this morning. On the back of the coin it says ...

Commemorative Souvenir Dollar, Redeemable at the Celebration Headquarters on or before August 15th 1969.

It is from a parade I went to honoring Buffalo Bill Cody in 1969.

I have purchased the stock for this build a Super Curly Maple Plus ... I think is what they called it and now I have to figure out how to proceed with the rest of the rifle. The gun I have pictured in my head will have a bright work buttstock, trigger guard, forend, and a blued barrel and lock.

Thanks Jimmy ! We thought it was lost ... have been looking for it for over 2 years.

The bright work appointments will be a little flashy but it is the rifle I have had in my head for this coin for a long time.

Looking for suggestions as I go along on this project

Just a tought, but instead of just drilling a hole in the stock and seting the coin into it. How about setting it into the lid of a cap box? The lid could be bored or drilled to accept the coin, which could be press fitted or soldered into place. This way you could see both sides.

I found a great example of the "bright metal" that I have in mind for my Hawkens to sort of match the Buffalo Bill coin.

I hope the owner of this rifle doesn't mind me using his pic ... I think this rifle is just beautiful

After seeing the rifle above I would consider doing my Hawkens with all bright metal work.

I wonder if that was ever done in Hawken history ??

I dont know if it was done in Hawken history. The last thing a mountain man wanted was something shiny to give away his position to any enemies. But I have to say, it really spruces up the looks!
I'm pretty sure Mike wont mind at all your using a pic of his rifle. Matter of fact, I think he'd be flattered. It really is a nice rifle with that polished steel. And if you decide to do that, I think you'll be very happy with your choice especially with that fancy maple stock. I've seen a couple other guys here in the forums with Hawkens with polished metal. I have to say, it really makes it hard to take your eyes off it. :bow:

Just treat the metal with Navel Jelly and you'll get a real nice dull clean metal look. My custom guns were done that way. :thumbsup:
