Ok ... Earlier you marked the location of the pipes , when you played out the relief and lugs ... Put your pipes there and confirm , adjust your marks ... Put pipes in and mark both ends then put a line down the middle ...I did this operation for the entry too but left extra wiggle room for later ... Now disassemble gun , drill holes on lines and then I use a modified hack saw blade tool I made to connect the holes and widen the slot a bit too , taking slot to mark also .... Make sure tab of new pipes fit in slot , if not make em wider till they do ....from this point on determine where each pipe goes and mark its position and front of pipes , dont change them later ... Put the black on them and time to start in letting them in the channel

Rob does the slot for the RR pipes go threw into the barrel channel.

Keep removing the black until the pipe is level and the I side of pipe is level with channel so ramrod rides without getting hung up ...then check your guide lines , mark your spot , tap pipe in tight ....and drill and pin the pipe .....on to the next one .... Make sure those pipes are in there TIGHT when you drill them !

Trim the tabs off just above pin hole .... Cut marks in each to identify their position, marks go to front ...make sure they go back into their position and dont touch barrel ...file off burrs. got the two pipes in ...start working the front wood to " roughed in " stage ....after coffee break ....

Hardest thing to explain to folks over the phone or on this devil device .... But darn important .... I'll try again . Everything is done in stages ...in the " all wood forward of mortices to in the rough " stage ....leave barrel in ... It supports the stock . one side at a time .... Use a rasp only , with the stock good and secured ... At 45 degree angle take off the corner as shown and work the full length leaving an approx. 1/8" gap at the barrel edge of the wood . You'll have to do a section , then move the stock down and repeat until you've done the full length . In the process you'll have to move the barrel pins to other side , support the gun both ends and work it as shown so you dont mess up the edge .... Do this full length ... When done flip the stock around , work on same side and do the same to the ramrod channel ....approx. 45 degree angle with rasp , work the full length and leave about 1/8" edge at ramrod groove edge . ..full length . When your done with both barrel and RR channel edge there will be ridge in the middle , full length ...take your tasp and l rock it down , rasp horizontal , full length , then go back over it rather slowly and just kinda clean it up , rounding it slowly blending it all to " round ish " . Once folks do this their eyes really light up .... They just made ax2x4 into a gun .... It did me ! Then ....do the other side .... Pretty soon ....your lookin at a gun by golly !! :)

The pic with pencil ...pencil is pointing to the 1/8" you leave , the light colored space above is at a 45 degree angle ( can't tell in the pic ) .....the pic with rasp ....the black marker line is the ridge that gets made from rasping at a 45 degree angle ....

....AND after !! ..... He// yeah !! The whole gun is " in the rough " now !! Yee Haw !!! Gonna weight it ..... 6.4 pounds completely assembled
So on the second side (thick side ) do you draw Aline full length of barrel as a guide or just eye ball it.Or do you saw some off first.

No line , I just eye balled it ...the ramrod channel and the barrel edge act as your guide . Its easy once you understand it . I could have sawn some off first but I chose to just rasp it off .... just to be safe. Oops ....hope you re read this .... I was thinking g of the buttstock , I could have sawn some off there ....the forearm forward ....it was already slabbed off ....all rasp work from then on .....

....someone was asking on here about tapered ramrods. Actually starting this one a bit early, usually dont make it till the gun is done . I taper the tip a bit then I take tip down tillnit fits in the brass end . Mark depth of inside of brass end on rod , put a shoulder on the ramrod ....take the tip down till it fits in the brass , not loose , scuff the rod and inside of brass tip ....put on some epoxy then drill it for a pin , finish nail , cut the nail , file the ends flat , then peen the pin over , then file it smooth . After that get your rasp and start on the ramrod .... Take a ramrod pipe and push it down on the ramrod and mark it .... take some more wood off with the rasp while spinning the ramrod slowly ....run the pipe down it and mark it again ....and naturally ...keep this up until you get to the end ... You put the ramrod against the barrel , brass tip at breech and mark the ramrod at the front of the first ramrod pipe ....thats your stopping point .. Tomorrow I'll finish up the ramrod ....gonna watch Longmire now :)
