In NMLRA and most sanctioned matches, firearms have to be benched in the upright position.

Couple of years ago at Friendship, a guy was working on his rifle, it went off and shot the end of finger off. There is a reason things are benched upright.

I was in Phoenix at the Winter shoot and my wife hit me in the back with a small rock to get my attention. The guy on my backside was trying to load a revolver without a stand. He was waving it all around while putting caps on it.. Wife was able to get hold of the Range Officer and he had a talk with the guy. Guy got mad and left.

Come to find out, he had just passed his Range Officer training that morning.

Be carful of those around you, especially on the pistol line.

I threw this one together because like the other members here that didn’t have a stand to load on. I had some scraps laying around a some old stain left over from refinishing the pistol.

Most of mine I built out of white wood, wish I had stained them dark. White wood really shows wear and tear and B/P staining.

Nice wood is better, I am just cheap.

I made one out of scraps. It's ugly but functional. Saw cut ends, glued and screwed together and no finish on the wood. Looks like Jemkinmd's without a finish. Took maybe an hour to complete.

Mine are functional and designed to fit specific pistols or type of pistols. They live a rough life. They are used a lot and get a lot of highway miles going to shoots. I am just too hard on them, they ride in the tool box in my truck bed.

I really like a hand crafted loading stand which looks like fine furniture.

One of the best I have seen is Barry Strickland's.

Here are pictures of a loading stand I made to fit my Pietta 1858 Remington and Spiller & Burr revolvers, back when I first started shooting BP guns. I didn't have any reference material, I just put it together as to how I thought it should work best.

I used some scrap oak I had lying around, and afterwards gave it two or three coats of tung oil. I didn't use any stain.

Nice workmanship.

I built a similar stand except the bottom extends past the vertical upright with small railing around it. Back there I keep a can of powder, balls, cleaning patches and spare caps. In the top I drilled 2 holes, one for a cleaning rod and one for a short starter for percussion and flintlock. Revolvers I use one cleaning rod and one cleaning rod with a brass brush for the forcing cone..

I do not use mine for loading, only storage and cleaning with revolvers. I use a cylinder loader for revolvers.

When starting a ball for percussion and flint, I do not start the ball in the stand, I pick up the pistol to start the ball. Starting the ball in the stand is a good way to crack a wood stock.

I got one started. It is a work in progress right now. Definitely will be strong enough. Made out of white pine 1X6. Left over from building bird houses for the back yard. Still have to stain, line with leather to protect finish, mount a carry handle, and fix a place to mount range rods. Flat up front may build a box for balls, caps, accessory tips, and patches.

Sorry no. This is just a cobbled together piece of scrap. I did it just to say i could and i will need it for my CVA Prospector for range use. The next one will be even more simple. Strickly for my 58's and 51's for loading and display. I like this one. Damn simple and effective for loading and display.
