i have been reading about casting here recently and was ignorant about blackening ect.i have an aluminum and steel mould in 451 and never do anything cept wipe the steel one with a bit of motor oil after session to prevent rust.i use a ladle and bout 2 ounces of lead for two cavity mould.propane plumbing torch for heat source and I cast out doors on the ground(cant drop a pot of lead if its already on the ground)very few rejects.question for yall veterns for cap and ball, are wheel weights safe for use?i know they are a bit harder than pure soft lead, but how do they perform ballisticaly?and are diving weights pure soft lead?

Cap n ball is one place I wouldn't use WWs. You need to shave a lead ring off the ball when seating it for proper function. A Ruger Old Army might survive the force needed to shave a .457 ball made of WWs over thousands of rounds if you can excerpt enough force on the lever but an open frame Colt style would surely spring.

Save the WWs for modern pistols and smoothbores. Even a rifle you can cast under size balls or use thin patch (not recmended).

If you want to try WWs in a revolver, best to get a reloading stand that loads the cyl. outside the revolver so you don't chance bending or breaking something. Diving weights can be made of about anything. I think they are usually soft lead but some have been made out of anything they could find, if they had a mould.

Being down here in "Diving/Fishing weight country" as I am...(So. Florida)...and enjoying both of those activities, plus shooting & casting...
I can tell you there's ZERO concern for using pure, soft lead when casting those non-bullet items.
That's not to say you won't find some, but you definitely can't count on it.

Don't forget that if you do load WW's in an open top percussion revolver it is going to exert greater forces against the wedge and pin going into the rifling than it did when you were loading the chambers. Aint good.

The owner of the tire shop where I get my tires is also a friend. And, he casts bullets for his modern guns. Of course, he has a big supply of used wheel weights. He says there is no longer any norm for what weights are made from. They can be almost anything. And, often one cannot tell what they are by looking at them. In other words, a mess. Personally, I wouldn't let wheel weights within a 100 yards of my house. :shake: My next lead supply will probably involve taking my truck and going to salvage yards within about a 100 mile radius of my home and just hope I strike some good soft lead at a reasonable price somewhere.

I just scored some soft lead at ace hardware in the form of some sort of roof pipe covering ,flashing?(roofer I aint)a thumbnail will easily scratch it.kinda pricey though.
