anyone have a good link on making bullet molds or a place that can take a conical i have and make a mold for me ?

Is it a wierd conical? Or just a conical? Dixie makes molds for solid-based conicals as long as they are funky shaped like a Whitworth or square Puckle bullet. I think that you might try Rapine, too.

this one was draw from a mold made from my barrel ,,, its a 2 band hollow base in 54 cal and 436 grain. when my wife bought the rifle for me we recived 50 round for it but no mold ,,im down two 4 . they are exstreamly accurate in the slow twist barrel.
i guess i will have to set them aside tell i can find someone to make a mold for me

NEI may make that mould for you. As well, LBT (texas) is a custom mould maker and is in operation now, but I don't know where. Perhap either can be found through a search engine. If you name the alloy, cast dimensions and final weight, LBT 'used' to guarantee it within a gr. or so. They're also much cheaper than NEI.
: I would measure your BORE dia. and purchase the bullet closest, but slightly oversize, then swage them to fit properly. You may find that the hollow base, isn't necessary, if the bullets sized properly for the bore. I did just this for my percussion Sharps.
: I've also used a section of barrel as a swage, to pre-groove bullets for deeper rifling for MuzzleLoaded bullets - and this worked beautifully as well.
: I'd check out LBT to see if they're still in operation.

dang :shocking:
i have a metal lathe if i knew how i could probably make my own ,,, any ideas ? :boohoo:

the address for NEI is http://www.neihandtools.com/online_order.html
BUT you best have deep pockets for them custom molds...

Especially from NEI.

If you want to make one yourself I guess you should start with the two blocks and set the index pins to keep them aligned. Drill a center hole the size of your minimum diameter (bottom of the grooves) and then cut the bands and nose to shape. You would need a 4 jaw chuck and tools that would fit in the cavity.

If only it were that easy. Good luck.

BTW, I live about 3 miles from the NEI shop. If I can help, let me know.

Try Lee Precision. They used to do runs of custom molds. (I have a couple of the big lube groove molds they turned out for some of the Cowboy Action Shooters.) Their molds are good quality and cast very consitent bullets in my experience. They're also aluminum, so they're very easy to use and care for. :m2c:

G'day,

Cast Bullet Engineering (Jim Allison) here in Australia makes a lot of moulds including special build. You may find he has done something like you want already. Have a look at his web site http://www.castbulletengineering.bigpondhosting.com/

Jim sends a lot of his moulds around the world due to his reputation. :RO: He manufactures mainly in brass.

Hey Capt Chee -
give me a holler (or a pm) - I have a bunch of links I need to dig up from a machinists forum.

If you can wait for me to get some free time, I am working at doing some small scale foundry work - I am currently casting aluminum, and plan to be casting bronze, and I have been thinking of casting up some bullet molds, using "lost wax" or "lost foam". Bag molds are almost impossible to find now.

Regarding DYI - If you have a lathe, have you ever tried to make a "cherry", or a chamber reamer? a 2 flute chamber reamer is remarkabley simple, and one can make a 2 flute cylindercial "bullet cherry" in a similar fashion. If you were willing to make the mold out of machined aluminum blocks, and willing to go with a flat base, you could machine it yourself.

latheing out the cherry would be no problem , I think i can even figure out the hollow base part . its turning out the actual female mold i dont know how to do .
the hollow base molds i have seen in the past are a 3 peice mold consisting of a right and left half and a center pin that is on a pivit like the spur cutter but on the bottom side

LBT quit makin custom molds a couple years ago..

BadWind, perhaps you're right about the "custom" mould part, but I do think they are back on the scene. I sold off all my LBT moulds a while back when I quit casting for several of my smokeless calibers..........anyway, a small blurb, geared mosty to smokeless powder shooters but ...FWIW.

As some have mentioned, there are several custom mould makers out there (Hoch, Jones, Long, etc.) but they are pricey. Probably run you about $125.00 or so, but they can make just about anything you design. Lee will make something for you also, but be prepared to pay a big set-up fee, plus the cost of the mould if it isn't one they already have a cherry for. Have you tried some of the regular mould makers, Lee, RCBS, Lyman, T/C to see how their moulds would shoot? I have 2 Maxie moulds that cast 406+- gr and 425+-gr. Sounds like you must have a pretty long bullet to weigh that much in a hollow base design. I wouldn't think the bullets would be stabilized being shot from a slow twist barrel as you stated. Emery

the rifling is round bottom, the rifle is a custom made house rifle .
from what I understand the bullet was pulled from the barrel and at 100 yards she groups 4 inches off the rest and i can hold a 10 inch plate off hand .
trust me she patterns very well with the slow twist ,,, i have never tried any other conical through her as the man my wife bought the rifle from assured me that this was the best bullet for that rifle and after 20 + years of shooting BP i can tell you 100% he is right .
if i have to i will pay the bucks for the mold ,,, i would much Ruther make my own if i could though .

howdy all i am new here so...

check the lyman 47 loading manual...they show pictures and everything on how they make theirs for the retail market. they do a lot of operations to produce their moulds. now if one wanted to go simpler it should not be hard to do.
