A simple plywood box filled with stacks of newspaper (for areas that don't have freezing temps wet it down). Makes a simple way of capturing your lead for recovery.You only have to replace the front, and even heavy cardboard will make fronts. :idunno:

Loooong time if ya shoot real light loads. Likely longer than it takes to catch a rebound in yer eye :shocked2: I sure would never shoot my 1849 at a tire, it's balls can often be seen in the bark of a ol ponderosa pine!

A young man I know just lost his eye due to a ricochet while sighting his gun in this year for deer season... Very sad.... :shake:

I wore glasses from about the age of 7 or 8 and probably would have lost an eye shooting a bb gun way back when if I hadn't had those "four eyes" on.

I recover my 22lr lead from a rimfire only trap I use. It will recover my squirrel gun loads once the build is done.

Sand trap much like these guy have mentioned. May I also mention it only works when not frozen. OTherwise they smash right up.

Also, if you hit lead on lead it'll splatter. So, it needs to be cleaned somewhat often. I shoot in a pattern of 5 target on one sheet, so my rounds don't get too concentrated.

I have recoved 375 H&H, 450 marlin, and 54 cal roundball. IF it doesn't hit another bullet up close, they're almost reusable.

Make a plywood box with a hinged top, 24" x 24" on the target end, about 36" long. (Or larger, your choice) Fill it with rubber playground mulch. It's just shredded tires. It will stop most bullets in 18" or less and it's easy to scoop down in and find the balls. If you use 1/4" ply on the front the balls will retain 99% of their weight.

Mine is up on two wheels made of cable spool ends and two front legs. It has a piece of corrugated roofing on the top to keep it dry. The piece of ply on the front is held by three pieces of thin galvanized angle iron (sides and bottom) so I can slide a new piece in and slide the shot-up one out.

Every so often I get a 5 gallon bucket and scoop out some mulch until I reach the area where the balls are congregating. I can tell by the trail of sawdust where they end up.

Every so often I put another few scoops of rubber mulch on top because it settles.

I made a bullet trap once (for 9mm pistol) out of a cardboard box filled with short chunks of 2x4 lumber cut-offs....it was surprisingly effective...

This tire setup catches almost 100% of the lead splatter. I recycle it into cast bullets. Easy to hang on a single T Post.

That's what I was looking for good pictures of a set up known to work since I have a big truck I got some 38 inch tires with no tread left that would be great for this and it doesn't need to be portable at dads place and ill bet I've got all the steel just laying up there also... If you hung those tires on a post with the plate in the middle (see pics above) it would catch all the lead without the sand.... just scoop it up, no sifting necessary. A tire that size would catch ALL the lead. Keep it simple and light.
