I picked up this canteen recently at a backwoods antique barn. The guy thought it was a Civil War canteen. I had never bothered to look into them a great deal and put their history to memory...but it was a good price so I thought I would take a chance on it. I definitely don't see them all that often for sale around here. As it turns out..it is Civil War...well known maker...J.H. ROHRMAN...from his 1864 contract. He apparently had 4 contracts during the war from Aug. 1863- Dec. 1864...to make a total of 510,000 canteens. I don't know how many he delivered...but that is a lot of canteens.
