If you want to get crazy, get it checked on a Rockwell hardness scale. The bill for the test alone will set you back into a new barrel!
 
OK, my turn! :haha: Considering the latest rage today is to charcoal blue barrels by burying them in a pit of coals I'd use the barrel. It sounds like your TC barrel didn't get anywhere near as hot as a barrel does in the charcoal bluing process.
