I grew up on a farm and when I was a kid in the 50's we milked cows for our own use. I've churned many a gallon of cream to butter with a hand crank churn. We had a small glass churn that held about a gallon of cream and a larger one that was made of galvanize metal that held several gallons.
When you are a kid it seemed that the cream would never get around to turning to butter. When it finally started it didn't take long to congeal to butter leaving the butter milk behind.
My mom would tease and tell me that if I turned the crank the wrong way it would turn into whipped cream.
