anyone know offhand when checkering started on buttplates? Also what type of engravings, markings, etc.. would be accurate for a 1750-1780 era fowler/blunderbuss type?

Probably post 1860 on buttplate checkering.
Here are some original english buttplates of the period.

Hello,

Yes I am building one. I have been working on the buttplate, so far it's quite good. Been thinking alot about what to put on the plate and the first thing came to mind was checkering. Am going to do the engravings like the first photo's show.

Here's what I have so far
