I've always had good luck at my local scrap yard. It's one of the smaller places run by a guy and not a big company. He just tells me to pick through the scrap barrel and find what I want, weighs it, and tallies it up at whatever the going rate is. I think I paid 1.50/pound last time, but that's been a year or so.

It's a mixed bag though, so you have to pick through for the clean soft stuff.

Look for scrap dealers in your area. Call an ask if they got any. I get some from such a place. Also advertise in local newspaper. You may be suppised what out there.

Check around for scrap yards in your area. In Kentucky there has to be several around.
Go to the junkiest, weed-grown, most disorganized one you can find.
That’s where you are most likely to find old lead pipe, roof flashing, etc. and at a decent price.
Since lead is now considered Haz-Mat by various alphabet agencies, fewer and fewer scrap dealers and plumbing suppliers want anything to do with it.
There may be some kind of EPA reporting requirements ( and penalties for not doing so ) that the larger scrap and recycling people don’t want to deal with.

Check eBay. Theres plenty of already cast and fluxed pure ingots for 2ish bucks a pound.

I don't do a lot of casting so I paid a bit more to get Rotometals 1 # ingots. I started with 5#ers and found that getting them into sizes that fit my pot was a LOT of wasted time and effort.
