I have a friend that is contemplating getting into black powder shooting. He loves to shoot guns and I asked if he has ever shot blackpowder before. He said he had not :: can you believe it???

Well I am trying to get him started off right, a smoothbore flinter :redthumb:.

He has been looking, and saw that Cabela's has a Brown Bess. I was not aware that Cabela's had a smoothbore flinter until he told me. My question is, who makes it for them? I suspect that it is Pedersoli. If not, who is it, and anybody had any experience with them? (If it is Pedersoli, no need to go into them, as they have been discussed many times before).

I told him that for what Cabela's is charging he could almost get a custom made one. He has agreed to not buy anything until we talk about it, as he knows nothing about blackpowder, and I have this wonderful resource available to get all the info he will need to make a decision.

He says that the first priority is (his)eye appeal. I believe that he is interested in hunting, roundball and shot, and maybe some target shooting, so PCness is not necessarily a factor.

Might as well start him off right getting a flinter as his first gun. Heck ..... for more than 200 years the flintlock was everyones first gun and they did just fine with it.

There are a few folks out there who could build a flinter smoothie for that price. I'd offer to take him shooting and show him the process involved in cleaning one before he drops the cash. Take him to a couple of events, who knows you might get lucky and find what he's looking for without the wait.

I got mine on sale for arround $800. I really love this musquet, it has been a joy to shoot. The only problem I have is a crack in the wood above the lock to the barrel tang. Cabela's did offer to repair it, but I decided to do it myself for no particular reason.

I think I got a good deal with it.

"for what Cabela's is charging he could almost get a custom made one."

Might get a semi-custom smoothbore from some of the builders, but not a Bess by any stretch. My Tulle was less than a Pedersoli Bess even with accessories and I am quite happy to have it.

I prefer it to my Bess, but then they serve different purposes.

Not likely. :peace:

Well, since the Euro went up, it's pretty close. Bess at Cabelas is running near to $1000 last time I checked. BUT, unlike a semi-custom, you can walk out of Cabelas with it that day, not wait 18 months.

however, tell him to go into the classifieds here. there's a Bess carbine in there right now for a great price.

brown bess with bayonet at cabellas $799.99 :relax:

Wonder if ya could slap one together from TOW parts for less (maybe not).

I think I'll crunch some numbers.

Not any more there isn't :: It is suppsoed to be on it's way here Monday.

Right now, Tracks Bess kit,is $852, and you still need to assemble, harden etc, the lock. Would be sweetie when done though.

Well, my comment was almost get a custom. He is not intending to buy anything just yet, was looking at the one in cabelas just for comparison sake. He is not sure yet what he wants. He thinks he wants a smoothie, and I am steering him that way :: It will depend a lot on what he decides he wants to do with it. At the moment hunting is the main purpose for it, but time will tell.

Bess will never let us down! She's true blue. Treat Bess right, and she will ALWAYS treat you right!!!!!

Confuses the pogees out of me why folk would pay that kind of money for a mass produced rack grade, when you can make yer own, for about the same price and have MUCH better parts.

Oh yeah and the tag " I Made it"

Dont give me that "I cant do it" hog wash.

Those of the day worked with a heck of a lot less than we have today. Folks like Chambers make it so easy to do.

I purchased mine through Cabelas in 1993 for about $700 at the time.I had to wait a few weeks while they ordered it.It was a Pedersoli and I still have her and she is beautiful.

$799.99 at Cabelas looks like a good price. They're $925 at Dixie same #2 kits are $725. I'm looking for that Bess Carbine and al I have come across is the Bess Trade gun. Who sells the carbine?
