Track has a Bess bayonet with scabbard (#Bayonet-BB) for $29.95. Does anybody know if it is any good? I generally like Track, but that price is suspiciously low.

It might be the India-made model. Not as nice as the Pedersoli, and it's too small for the Pedersoli Bess (at least mine was.) I think it was made for the Jap Bess, which apparently has a thinner barrel.

I cut the socket, opened it up, and brazed in a steel insert (I meant to weld it, but grabbed the wrong rod.) After I filed it out and polished it, you could just detect the thin lines of brass. Eh, whatever. I call it a primitive smith's fix. Good for militia, eh?

I should elaborate - I mean the OLD India model. For the old Jap Bess. The Indians are making new bayonets for the Indian-made Besses, so it might be one of those.

Track says it has a .935 ID which is a little big for my Colerain Bess barrel, though they say it should fit a Colerain , a Getz, or a "Second Model Brown Bess". For the price I may get one just to see. I can always silver solder a shim inside to make it fit.

I like my tulle better but I picked up my bess in the bargain cave offered $500 and they said ok. Should go to a shoot and ask to try a few guns most guys are happy to help.. Chuck

I got a Springfield 1861 and Zouave bayonet from Track and they look good and seem sturdy and well made, I have no complaints.

When I got the Bess from Cabelas I insited on the bayonet from Pedersoli, but I really see nothing special about it compared to the ones I got for the Spr and Zouave. I would not feel uncomfortable at all getting Tracks Bess bayonet - I wish I had. I pretty much wasted $100 on Pedersolis/Cabelas bayonet.

I'd almost recommend that you NOT start your friend with a flintlock smoothbore. Where's he going to go from there? Right to tubes mounted on the end of broomsticks? As we all know, this is a progressive disease. The victim usually starts out with a cap and ball firearm of some sort, then progresses to flintlock rifle, then to musket, etc. You will be depriving your friend of several layers of symptoms. graybeard :m2c:
