yep I bought 10 bags of rubber mulch from lowes. filled up a rubber made container appx size 3ft high 2ft wide and 3 foot long I fired a 490 rb with 60 grains into the 2 ft side of the container at 20 yard . the round ball did next exit the container. I moved back to 30 yards for the three shots at a target on the container now that I know it works I will build a proper box that will have a removable 2ft by 3ft wood panel that I will paint my target on and I will be able to save my lead I read about this online and it really works.

they used to but, now you'll have to find one used or new-old-stock or send a barrel to have bored.

does someone make a smooth bore 20 or 12 gauge barrel for the investarms hawken 50 ?

I really doubt it, assuming your barrel is 15/16" since it's a 50 cal.

I have an older one dating back to pre-lawyer days. It's in 58 caliber (approx 24 gauge) and the barrel is really thin compared to those you see today. Add in a few dovetails or screw holes along the way, and the remaining steel is REALLY thin.

I love that 58 because it's so light and handy, but it kinda curls the hair on the back of my neck to think of one even thinner.

I have one of their .58 carbines too. A couple bad spots in the bore from the previous owner but its accurate. At just under 37" long its a handy little gun!

Mine has the 28" barrel, so not quite so handy. The check book is in trouble when I run across a 58 cal carbine. Crazy because I have a TC Hawken custom barreled with a tapered 24" 58 cal barrel (lucky find), and it's about as handy as it gets. Of course, it's so loud that friend have named it DANG! :rotf:

I looked a a few on line. the damascus barrels and steel shot is kinda scary.

I'm with you on the damascus, with or without steel shot. I know it's bias, but I spent too many years being warned away from damascus in old breechloaders with modern smokeless ammo.

As for steel shot.... Velocities from muzzleloaders are so much lower than modern, I've never found happiness with steel. I just bite the bullet and buy bismuth or the original ITX, both of which have been wonderful on ducks.

One shotgun to watch for is the Pietta, also sold under the Navy Arms label. They're really light and handy, yet very well made. Often much more reasonably priced that the Pedersoli, even used. I shot one for 20 years, sold it (fool I am!) when lead was finally outlawed up here. Then once suitable alternative shot came along, I passed up a whole lot of Pedersolis until another Pietta surfaced about 10 years ago. Happiness returned to my household! :)

A couple of years ago I got a 35 year old .50 cal. Cabelas/Investarms Hawken from a member here at the Muzzleloading Forum Classifieds. It's a tack driver, and while not flint, it is still loads of fun to shoot. A lot easier for field carry than my .50 GPR, too.

While I usually shoot .54 cal, the .50 Cabelas is what I reach for when the mood for .50 cal. hits me.
