How historically accurate are the cabelas hawkens and the Lyman great plains rifle. the time period i am interested in is the fur trade era between 1810 and 1840.

I currently have a cabelas (investarms) hawken in 50 cal and I either want to customize and make it more period correct or purchase a lyman rifle. which do you think is the best way to go?

Also I want to step up to a 54 cal. to do this with my current rifle I would buy a Green mountain barrel with 1 in 70 twist since I shoot only RB. Have any of you done this? was it difficult
I have both the Cabela's Traditional Hawken in .54 and the GPR in .54. Changed the barrel in the Cabela's to a .40 GM IBS as I found I shot the .54 GPR more and more. As far as PC . . . Ain't goin to touch that . . . Swapping out to the GM IBS (for the Cabela's) was easy - only had to shorten the under-rib about 3/8", the rest was a drop-in fit.

.54 GPR
I built the kit 3 yrs ago with the 1/60 twist and absolutely love it. With the slow twist and .530 prb in front of 80grs Goex ffg its dead on out to 100yds.
I'd go with the Lyman in .54
I also have a TC Hawken in.54 which shoots great also but the GPR sees more range time.

A clue. The bottom one is the GPR.

Yeah,,but you can't see the fishbelly in the bottom picture because it's cut off...and there is a little "belly" to the forestock in the second picture,so I think #2.

Trying to learn something here...
