My wife and I spent a nice weekend at the Cadron Blockhouse on the Arkansas River west of Conway, Arkansas. The EARA had a small trade fair there which was fun. The blockhouse was originally built on the site of a trading post to protect locals from Osage raids in the second half of the 18th century.

Neat stuff. Is there a particular reason why the 2nd floor is larger than the first? Is it a tactical thing for defense? :hmm:

I would think it is, would make it harder to scale the wall to get on to the roof with that ledge overhanging...

You don't want to be standing under that overhang when they pour hot water or grease though the holes above. :grin:
 
Claude and Musketman pretty well covered it--don't know if it was a reason or not, but the upper level, having more floorspace, also allows more people to sleep up there in bad times--the lower level is the kitchen/saloon/trading post. Below is what the trader/merchant might have worn:
