I heard today that Lyman stopped making GPR kits... Apparently due to a lack of demand?? Doesnt sound right to me. :shake:

Don't sound right to me either, but with the economy the way it is . . . who knows, maybe Uncle Barry will bail them out too . . .

Just because someone is still takeing orders doesn't mean that they may be quit makeing them. The orders may be filled with on stock rifles.

Okay, The answered me...... GP Kits HAS NOT been discontinued. :hatsoff: to Lyman.

That's good news, espically for the shooter who must live on a low budget, and get a half descent piece for the cost.

I fit that profile. :rotf: :rotf:

Me too. Every time i am on Dunlap Woodcrafts website and the wife walks by and ask me what I am looking at, she imediately says,"Forget IT"
She really gets nervous if I am on the fone with Wayne and am asking him if he wants to buy some logs of curley maple.
She knows I like to barter and will trade logs for a kit.. :rotf:
The woman knows me to well. :haha:

I know the feeling. I get that same reply when I am on TOTW or DGW. :surrender: I also go to Dunlap's website to oogle some of the blanks they got there, since we dont have any suppliers here in SA who will supply to the public. And I cant take the chance to import some of his wood as it will end up in a fire somewhere stolen out of the postal system. :shake:

A friend who stays in Maryland told me to go have a look at Waynes site since he always buys his blanks from him. They usually then end up with Ken Netting...  :shocked2:

So you guys over there and down in SA are very lucky. Because as you all know the GPR is an italian ML from Investarm and they are not available in bigger cals than .45 here in Germany at all, even Italy is not so far away. Meanwhile I have heard that german traders have to order a min. number of 20 rifles to get their orders delievered to Germany.
Bigger cals are not available at all, even not fro other brands like Ardesa/Traditions.

So I was very lucky to get a nearly new unshooten T/C Hawken capper in .54 from the classified ads.

Considering that we are very lucky. We have ML's going up to 4 bore. Many of them are in the mid/large range from .58 to 10 bore. The .50 and 54's are very popular and the .45 less so (although I love my Ardesa Hawken in 45 with a 1:16 twist...). Believe it or not, a .32 and .36 caliber is almost impossible to find here. There are some guys who have them, but to order a barrel in that caliber is almost as much as a complete rifle.

Now the problem comes in with the price of these toys... When you consider that the Rand/Dollar is 7:1, add VAT of 14%, import taxes of 15%, shipping and handling and the dealers' insane markups, a Lyman GPR costs us almost the equivalent of a Gibbs rifle in the US.

I bought my GPH 4 years ago for R4000, which is about $571. It has doubled in price since. Off the shelf the GPR cappers costs R7000 and the rocklocks costs R8250. A GPR flint kit is R6800.

A alternative will be to get the guys to build a locally manufactured ML right? Wrong, there are guys who are currently getting their shops setup to build commercial guns, but these will start around R15 000.00. Take the exchange rate off and you come to a $2100 rifle... :shake:

You know fellas I've been watching this thread 'cause it seemed that Lymans discontinuing the GPR kits would have been like the canary in the coal mine keeling over. Had me going there for a while.

Goodcheer, I was quite nervous myself. The story started when I approached one of our dealers about the possibility of importing a .54 Flinter kit. He went to the SA importers to fetch a consignment of stock and inquired about my interest and the reply was "that Lyman discontinued them due to a lack of demand...." I thought that it was :bull: but wasnt sure (with the economic environment the world found itself in and thats when I thought about asking you guys. :hmm:

When I got the reply from Lyman I mailed it to the dealers and they took it too the importers who then said "they made a little bit of a mistake..." :shake: :nono:
