My shooting buddy is a Naturalist, and we were just talking about cane grass vs. bamboo. Cane grass would of course be PC, but bamboo and cane grass are quite different. Bamboo draws silica into the structure and has fantastic strength, and also resists splitting if the section is cut to expose the cavity.
Cane grass is pretty soft past the "skin" and will readily split/fray at the cut. Cane grass can also be compressed easily with a pair of pliers where bamboo will definitely fight you.
My buddy makes his horns and priming flasks from green and black bamboo and they will outlive cane grass articles easily.
