Alright, what's the alternative to sitting fox? It doesn't matter to me who I get a kit from as long as it's good parts and not a pile of junk.
Personally, I would go get something from Veteran Arms and cut it down, which is pretty much what Native Americans did anyways. I would start maybe with a Bess, an English trade gun, etc.

While mine is nowhere near historically accurate. I made this gun out of just the entertainment value of it. I found a used CVA Trapper at the local gun shop, the stock had already been shortened up and there were a couple small cracks in the stock. I got it cheap, cut the barrel at 20 inches and fixed what needed fixing. It's a hilarious amount of fun to shoot.

When I first got into Mountain Men stuff a very good friend gave me this gun. . It is 45 Cal and 1 1/8 across the flats.
Very crude build indeed but I have killed several deer with it. It could be a buffalo horse back gun, canoe or blanket. To fifty plus yards its very accurate. I'll never get rid of it. Just because my late mentor/ friend gave it to me.
