Are cap and ball pistols legal in Colorado? The regs used to say that only guns that are "shouldered" are legal. That statement has been removed. Now, the regs say that the weapon needs to be "single barrel, not loaded from the breech". So, I believe that single shot pistols are now legal; but, I'm not sure about cap n ball. After all, they are not loaded from the breech-they are loaded in the cylinder. They are a single barreled gun, eventhough they are a six shooter. Seems like a gray zone to me.
Any thoughts out there?

My first thought is to ask the wildlife authorities in Colorado. No gray area for them, and the only gray area you are likely to find will be in online opinions. Since the folks with the badges will be the ones who'll write your ticket if the online authorities are wrong, I'd listen to them first.

Get something from an official. Saying you heard it on the forum won't cut it when the man in the green suit is chatting with you.

There are no grey zones with inline options in Colorado. Yes, I will certainly ask the DOW. Just thought someone in this forum might have already asked the question.

You can legally carry a hand gun during muzzleloader season you just can't use it to dispatch a wounded elk or deer.
I carry either my 1858 cut down remington 44 or my 45 TVM pistol.

Greenmtnboy: in the reading the regs, it seems to me that a single shot muzzleloading pistol is legal now. It doesn't say anything about having to be "shouldered". Isn't it legal to shoot or dispatch a deer or elk with one of these. Mine is a Traditions Trapper .50, so it is the right size bore for what the regs allow. After thinking about all of this, I got to wondering that ROA could be legal for deer as it has a single barrel and is loaded in the cylinder, not the breech. All this seems like one of those gray zones in the regs.
What do you think?
Thanks.

you got me there I'm not sure it kinda like shoot, shovel ,shut up.
Have I had to use my back up? yup once on a spined elk that I called in for a very good friend, shi& happens so I liked to be perpaired.

Most regs I have seen consider a cap and ball revolver NOT to be a muzzleloader since the charge is loaded directly in the cylinder, not the barrel. My home state of Texas won't even allow a double-barreled muzzleloader.
