Far easier to dismiss anything that doesn't fit your notions than to accept new data. Someone eventually will say with self appointed authority "certainly this is an anomaly and shouldn't be taken as a thing that was done commonly, so we should reject it out of hand for period portrayal."
Here we have a PRB from 500+ years back....certainly that 1 gun wasn't the first with the loading style. You don't try something new when you are planning an assault. You go with what you know works and save experiments for less pressing times.
