Before last spring I only owned 1 caplock: TC .50 Hawken Custom. Fun Gun but I then went the flintlock route.

Then I got an old double rifle, a 16 bore shotgun and a 14 bore shotgun. All are caplock.

Gentlemen I need help. I looked in TOW for cappers; I saw 3: one straight, one oval, and one shaped like a big apostrophe.

With all your experiences, which capper would you advise me to get?

ps - cappers other than those I've described are welcome as well.

Many Thanks

I have both the "oval" and "apostrophe" by Ted Cash. The oval is a "rifle" capper and the apostrophe is a "pistol" capper. They both have seen plenty of duty in my bag, but I prefer the pistol capper for all round use. Lets me see that the cap is in proper position before depositing it on the nipple better than the rifle one. Just my preference, they both work well.

I like the Ted Cash Riflemans Capper for vous an shoot's an such, it let's me "press" the cap on the nip with some authority. I have simple round leather cappers for field use if the mood strikes me.

Make your own. I did these in leather and they worked on all my percussion rifles. Cheap, too.

Another vote for simple and home made! The three below were made from a packet of precut "flowers" or whatever you want to call them. Bought a bag of about eight at Tandy for less than three bucks. Use a 5/16th punch to make the holes. Can be hung from the center hole or an edge hole. The edge holes meant to hold caps are slit through to the edge to make it easier to pull the capper away from the cap.

I have a brass strightline capper, but never used it and instead always used my Ted Cash Rifle capper for all my muzzies.

Here's another vote for the TDC Pistol Capper. Works great with a piece of leather lanyard around yer neck--can do it really fast if you need to, like in a wood chopping competition!

I thought you were one of the ones a while back to advise a capper, so that my thumb would not be taken off by a plasma jet?

Here's mine, folks:

The extra piece of leather is extra protection from any plasma eruption, and it seats the cap with some authority, as well.

I ordered a straightline capper years ago, it was cheap and pretty much worthless. The more expensive ones might be better, but the caps bunched up, wouldnt push out, then shot out of the capper, driving me mad! After dropping about 5 caps while trying to cap my rifle while hunting I created a new sport; the Cheap Capper Chunk! I set the standing record at 23 feet, 9 inches! :bull:
I know just use my fingers, fwiw.

OMG! Have to worry about plasma jets now :shocked2: It's bad enough I have to wrap my body in aluminum foil to protect from cosmic neutrinos.

Plasma eruption? :hmm:

OK, Gents, lest I be wasting my time... is it or is it not true that people have lost their thumbs to jets of plasma when capping with bare fingers?

(Definition of plasma: Superheated gas, fourth state of matter, as opposed to the sci-fi version. Same damned thing that makes a mess of the insides of tanks from a shaped charge from an RPG or similar.)

It would be fugly thing, and I have no reason to believe folks here would lie about such a serious issue.
