I have several Lyman perc rifles and got a good deal on 1000 Reminton caps. Problem is that the caps don't always go off on the first blow. I find the cap to be flattened instead of slightly cupped with no detination. I've tried pushing them down to make sure they are as seated as they're gonna be, but I still get mis-fires. I guess the Lyman nips have too steep of taper. Grinding stainless steel nipples is not my idea of a good time, so can someone recommend good replacement nipples that will fit Rem caps?

You're right on track with your observation about the taper, though I'm a little surprised the Remingtons won't fit. I had trouble with CCI, but the Rems were okay.

Not a big deal. If you're using black powder, the Ampco nipples from Track of the Wolf are dandy. They fit both Rem and CCI without issues. If you're using a substitute powder I'd go with one of the hot shot style nipples- They fit both, too.

I shoot RSW and have had a few not seat well in the early days,my fault, now I just ensure they are seated down.
I use Uncle Mike Hot Shot nipples and RSW caps.
as for grinding the nipple, put it in the drill chuck, threads first, and turn it on,mini lathe, hold a file against the nipple and slowly retaper it till it fits the taper on the caps a little closer.not to much you lose the water tight fit!!!!!!and they will fall off, Experience,,great teacher!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same problem with both a Cabelas Hawken and a Lyman GPR and tried the Hotshot nipples from TOW with no change in luck using CCI caps.

I am considering pre-loading the mainspring by adding a washer. I just bought Remington caps as recommended here and have not tried them but the box that I purchased at wal-mart states that they are tighter to allow a more secure fit and to keep them from falling off when using a capper. This may be something new. :idunno:

you dont mention what size remington caps your using? are you using #10s or #11s?

I had the same problem so I chucked the nipple in a drill and while it was spinning I layed a fine file aginst it. I had to remove very little material. There were burrs that were removed first! They now fit all caps and if your careful they will not fit loose! Geo. T.

I thought that I would post about the new stainless steel nipplke that I just got in a order from TOW. It fit in my GPR no sweat. I did a check of Remington and CCI both fit looser than they do on the origional nipple. Not sloppy loose but just not as snug. Prehaps they realized that they were slightly over sized! Geo. T.

Easy fix. Chuck the nipple in a drill and with a file while the drill is turning, turn the nipple down until you get that just right fit. I do this to ALL my nipple guns. Since you have noticed that all caps are not the exact same size, you may find this to be needed to any time you change cap brands.

IMO, if folks want to file down their nipple while running it in an electric drill they should try to chuck on the body of the nipple, not the threads.

The hardened jaws of the electric drills chuck can deform the nipples threads and if these damaged threads are screwed into the bolster/drum, they will damage it.

i used to have the same problem with my lyman GPR and cci caps. no problems when it was new but as i shot it for a while thats when it started to happen. the nipple itself was acctualy getting mushroomed from hammer falls. replaced the original nip with a bronze one and it works fine. if i remember correctly i was using #11 cci caps.

i just bought a used 54 trade rifle, plan on shooting friday, and all i have are CCI and rem caps, well see how they work.

If you or a previous owner dry fired the rifle with no caps on the nipple, it will have likely damaged the nipple. nipples damaged in this manner are prone to having caps fit poorly and to not fire on the first try. Dry firing flares the top of the nipple and the cap will not go all the way down, When you attempt to fire the first time, it will drive the cap the rest of the way down on the nipple but not fire it. Then the second attempt will usually fire the cap because it is now seated fully against the top of the nipple. If you have any mechanical skills at all, you can put the threaded end in a drill and use a fine file to repair the damage to the nipple. Otherwise, just order a few new nipples.

You are right. I should have assumed that people would know better and it is wrong to assume anything.

I find the nipples vary quite a bit in size where the cap goes and just recently I bought two that the threads were not formed right. They were loose in the threads, I returned them and the next ones are good. Quality control?
