IIRC reading here a while back that many carried their Walkers/Dragoons slung on the saddle (somehow). Made sense to me as I would think many would find carrying 1 or 2 of those monsters on the belt just a might cumbersome.
On a hike of 3-4 miles and above, any ‘standard size’ heater causes me 3-4 days of back/hip pain, just enough change in gait or balance. With a Walker/Dragoon I would need help out of the woods. Too old for anything ‘cept 1860 or NMRem in a shoulder rig.
As I understand it, usually there was a holster or two attached to the saddle horn and those large pistols were carried there, or at least the extras. I love the 2nd and 3rd model Dragoons, but I have to wear stout suspenders when carrying it on a belt. Shoulder rig is better.
First holster I ever made was for my 3rd model Dragoon. Not a big deal with a good gun belt.
and a belt would help also!

Weight aside, carrying a Colt Walker concealed would be like trying to conceal a huge watermelon under your jacket. I sometimes, carry my 1861 New Army, which is smaller than the Walker or Dragoon and leaves a bulge under my slightly oversize jacket that is noticeable to all but the most obtuse,Is it possible to carry a Walker concealed ? I would think it about as easy as carrying a small anvil concealed !
I had a Dragoon with special cylinder, I shot it is SASS events, didn't seem to bother me, but that was 20 years ago

Have your woman carry it in her purse that way it is ready when you need it but it is not a burden to you. Lol.
I'm going off on a tangent here but when I carry, I want the pistol concealed. If a goblin shows up he's going for the person who looks like a threat first. I wanna surprise him. My CCW is a small, flat, unmentionable with an easily reloaded extra magazine carried in a IWB holster. If I can't settle his hash with 18 rounds I shouldn't be carrying........... now back to our regularly scheduled program.
Suspenders are fine and dandy and get the job done quite well. Afterall their job is just holding up your pants. But I don't particularly like tucking in my shirt tails. So I've been wearing the suspenders under the shirt. You get used to it.
It would be a whole lot easier if men's purses were in fashion.
BELT FIX OPTION;
Most experienced pistol-packers on this forum state that having the right Carry-Belt solves most carry issues & I agree.
Over the past 3 years I've been wearing a Bull-hide belt by Bull Hide Holster Belts, Leather Gun Belts, Belly Band Holsters .
Unlike my 80 year old carcas,, the aged patina on this belt improves with age & the thin steel linings these belts feature prevents
holster-sag no matter what position I use it in. Wish I had discovered this option 50 years ago.
Most experienced pistol-packers on this forum state that having the right Carry-Belt solves most carry issues & I agree.

They are! We wear them every time we take a muzzleloader afield, we just don't call them that or tote them to town.
Beautiful workmanship & stain on the holster & the pistol isn't a slouch either !!First holster I ever made was for my 3rd model Dragoon. Not a big deal with a good gun belt.
