carving name on barrel, how to?

on my wife's rifle i would like to carve her name on the barrel for her. is this very hard to accomplish? what is the best chisel tool? or can i make a good tool to do it?

It sounds like you want to do engraving rather than carving. The best advice I can give is to search the forum for engraving and read up.

Yes, it's pretty hard, not something you are going to be able to do without much practice and study. There is another option, you can etch her name on the rifle. I did this one with a battery charger and salt water. Google salt water etching, With a little practise you can do a nice signature. This is one I did a few years ago

I am not an engraver, I have poor penmanship and my grand daughter is a better artist. But with little practice and tools a name can be engraved that suits me. Sharpening the graver is the hardest part but angles can be done with simple grinding and stones.
