I read the article about the Caywood southern mountain rifle article in the recent Muzzleloader magazine. It seems a very nice rifle. I am not familiar with Caywood Gunmakers other than their website. I read on their wedsite that they use their own barrels without touch hole liners, and locks from Quality Locks, inc. What do your think of them? Does anyone have this rifle?

Thank you,
Bill Kekatos

The article was of course written by a principal in the Caywood firm. Caywood makes a fine semi-custom gun--I have no experience with their rifle per se, but have handled alot of their smoothbored guns. The locks are made by Rowe and have a good reputation. I am not sure who supplies their barrels. The stocks are cut out, formed and inlet with computer driven machines as I understand it. The guns I have handled were very nice and their owners have been happy with performance--a number of reenactors in this region [they are made in Arkansas] hunt with them as well as carry them at historic events and shoots.

I know the rifle starts at $1900.00. This is no reflection on Caywood or quality as I have not heard anything but praise from owners, but for that kind of change I would expect a true custom built gun.

Hi Bill,
Don't have one of these rifles (yet) but have handled a couple of them, visited the Caywood shop when the Southern rifles were just getting ready to go into production a few years ago. They are very nice.
Caywood products, as a rule, are high quality. No, they aren't a custom gun and you might be able to get a custom gun for the same price or close, and that might even be the way to go. With Caywood you might not have to wait as long (but I don't know that for sure).
What I can say for sure is that, if you DO decide to go with the Caywood, you will be purchasing a high quality muzzleloader.
Good luck, please let us know what you decide.
