Hi Buckskinn,
I only use thinned S-W tung oil for the first 2 coats to help seal the stock. Then I always use unthined oil from then on. Apply as many coats as you like until you get the sheen you want but don't thin the oil after the first coats. Also, I often apply the first coats on walnut with 220 sand paper to create a slurry of finish and sawdust on the surface that acts as a filler. I let the slurry dry to a crust and then sand it smooth. After that, it usually only takes 3 or so coats of unthinned finish to achieve a satin sheen.
