I swab the barrel with alocohol too. I have always used soap and hot water and have never had a problem with rust.

Sprayng Ballistol down the barrel and swabing out will clean most of it until you get home. Then clean by any or all the methods listed above including the pump system sold by TOW.

Quality is usualy equated to the cost. Just buy the best you can afford and get with it

As far as the chambers Kit I'm wanting to get a flinter that is decent and not cost me an arm and a leg. $700 or more is a lot of money for me.

Well, Mine isnt "desent" Its fan-freakin-tasic.

And it cost me a grand total. I made it myself,a nd it was worth every red cent.

No only the rifle, but the experience getting there.

I think he means a "Grand" total. As in $1000 dollars.

I, also, misread it at first.

Not sure but that is what I think he meant with his post.

That's the way I read it too.

I have a GPR that I built from a kit. It's a nice rifle, but it'll always be a Lyman GPR. I could have bought a Chambers kit and ended up with a really fine rifle with just a little more time invested. It's caplock though, so I can't compare the GPR flinter to a Chambers flintlock.

I do have a Chambers Colonial Virginia flintlock on a fowler, and it is one of the best, if not THE best, locks I've ever owned.

Don't let the cleaning issue decide which gun you buy. Cleaning is simple.

I have a custom .50 cal flintlock witha siler lock a 42 inch barrel and its a very nice rifle but I find my self hunting with my GPR .54 it handles a lot beter in a blind. And for me the hooked breach is easyer to clean. Rocky

If you plan on getting a kit and this is your first foray into MLing, I'ld recommend the Lyman. You can get it for $300 and change as posted earlier and even if you have real grief assembleing it, it will still fetch $150 should you decide MLing isn't for you. The chambers OTOH, will cost $800 (at least) and it's not hard to make it into a $400 gun (or less). If you plan on getting a completed gun, you may want to give the chambers a little more consideration. A GPR will cost $400? and will be worth $300 if you decide to sell it. The chambers will cost (I'm guessing) $1200-$1500 finished by a competent builder, plain, no carving PB or inlys, just properly finished, and should you decide to sell it, it would be worth $1000- $1300. Here's the rub, you will have a much more positive experience with the chambers than the lyman and the chances that you will stay will MLing will likely be greater. In the end, either option is good, just get one and start making smoke. You'll be glad you did.

this is by no way MY First foray in Mling. I've got the T/C in cap lock. love it. it was a kit form when purchased. I'm just considering a flinter. the only thing that has got me gun shy is this new osha thing that might make getting real Black hard to get in my neck of the woods. :( I have to order as it is. been wanting to put an order in to Gaff out of mexico mo but havn't done it yet.
