I am wanting to change my rear sight on the Hawken from the fully adjustable to the more traditional type. Is this something that I can do at home or do I need to hire out me a gunsmith?
Tobias If yours is A TC the have a set to replace them . The base screws on barrel, and has a dvetail to ajust the sight.(rear) the front is a differnt post and fits dovetail. Dilly

:hmm: oops being so new to bp I hadn't realized that there were different Hawkins on the market. Mine is a CVA Hawkins. My apologies for not being more clear.
I don't own a CVA so I'm not sure if the rear sight is 3/8" Dovetail or something unique. However those two sites above are a pretty good start. Basically, you should be able to do it at home. Just dont get careless when tapping the rear sight off if its in a dove tail.
Your Welcome! :v Keep us posted on what you ended up with and how it works out.
Oh one more thing. Make sure you get the right dovetail size. Most are 3/8". Not sure what CVA is as I don't own one. More than likely a triangle small metal file helps. File the sight not the dovetail notch on the barrel to fit.
CVA Hawkens are not 3/8" dove tail. They are just under it a bit and require the dovetail to be filed out a bit or the sight to be filed to fit.
I changed the sights on mine with a CVA bobcat rear sight. fit right in.
FYI, I have been wanting to change my sights on a CVA mountain rifle. had the original tradional style that former owner put a saw file too. Purchased a new set of sights today at a Mountain Man trade show.
These are very similar to the TC modern sights. This had a 3/8 dovetail adaptor with it.
CVA is just a bit under 3/8.
DONT FILE THE BARREL DOVETAIL.
gently file the adaptor to fit the CVA slot.
The difference that I am seeing is about .012 of an inch, just enough to not fit.
