An old file works great.

And it works well while still in its file form if you grind the teeth away from at least one edge. One of my strikers is a ~2" piece of an old file and it works as well as my Ameling striker.

Think I'll make a steel for a flint and steel fire maker. What steel is used, spring ?
To go with the tinder box. MD

1095 is what the late Mike Ameling used, IIRC, and his are probably as good as strikers get. If you want to make one, do a search on this site for some of his posts on making strikers.

1095. If you forge it be sure to normalize it before hardening. Heat to 1475, soak a few minutes, quench in brine that is about 100°. Some temper at 300°. I don't, but you might want to try on a piece of scrap and see how well it does.

It has been said that linen or cotton cloth was dear to these people but a 10" x 10" piece of cloth would give you 50 2"x1" pieces. I have used cloth, wood, and birch fungus. Both wood and cloth can be easily made without a tin but it takes longer.Nice thing about wood and fungus is that they occur naturally.
