Hi all,

An new to the forum so bear with me. I am looking for a quality cheese box canteen. I have heard great things about cartland tavern but have been unable to get ahold of them. ( sent 3 messages over the last month) does anyone have any other sources for a canteen that is quality?

I checked them out, they do have some decent prices... However no wood canteen. Unfortunately the tin canteen I already have. It is correct for my impression, however the cheese box canteen is more correct. Just wish they had one...

Lol, yeah I saw those prices and I almost layed an egg..... I'm sure they are great canteend...buuuuut I think I would have to pass

I have a cheesebox canteen from Bill Payson of cartland tavern. The price and the quality were unbelievable. He could charge twice as much and it would still be a deal. I had to wait a bit for mine, but it was worth it.

Mine's a Cartland.

Recommended even if you do have to wait.

Doesn't seem like it would be all that hard to just make one. :idunno:

With a wood working shop and a few tools it is feasible. Except cutting the grooves in the wrap for the sides would require a special coopers tool or other clever devices.

there canteens are decent enough however they are no where near correct for my portrayal of a Line soldier of the 1st NY Regiment in the year 1776. The canteens from Cartland are 100% correct

Actually, as I've made curved/decorative trim items (for laminating) for boats out of thin strips of both ash & hickory, you can accomplish the same thing by BOILING the thin pieces of wood until it bends easily into most any shape.

yours, satx

will 3/8 ash be able to be bent if its boiled????? seems fairly thick. laminate and such is very thin

YES. 3/8 ash or hickory can be bent "into a pretzel" if boiled/steamed for a suitable period.

IF I was the one building a wooden drum canteen, I'd use multiple layers of veneer and perhaps in contrasting colors/species of wood.

My Cartland wrap is about 3/16", not 3/8".
Rifleman1776, there are no grooves. The wrap is nailed to the sides at about every three to four inches. The sides of mine seem to have been fitted proud of the wrap, then all planed off even.

Inneressing.... :hmm: Methinks a good seal might be difficult. But, if he does it, he does it.
