This is the inlet for the entry thimble with skirt. The skirt was "stretched" rearward a little on a buck so that it is very low profile. The forends on a "Vincent" style are very shallow and narrow.
I took this picture to show other beginners that patience is your best weapon. This took about 3 hours to complete with scraping. It is a very tight fit all around.
On a side note, if the skirt needs to be shaped, push and press it into shape, do not smack it unless it is firmly located on a buck.
The nosecap is hidden, you will see it when the build is done!

This is the buttplate installed. The wood is not sanded down level yet, but you get the idea.
The brass plate in the foreground is a toeplate that did not pass muster. Tying in a "Hawken" style toeplate requires length/angle/curvature to all come together at once. I did not make the first one for a laugh or two.
This install is 100% scraping, and took about 5 hours.
The finished buttplate is exactly 4-3/16" tall, as per the drawing. A buddy measured a real Vincent in a private collection, and this was the figure.
Very tiny, but it looks in proportion with the stock. It is super comfortable, and sets perfectly on the outer bulk of the shoulder.
All my fears were for naught! :)

It is a term for a form. Coachbuilders past and present make a wooden form that the metal skin is shaped on.
They use hammers to shape the skin into body panels. All those old aluminum skinned racecars were done this way.
I use oak, or whatever is handy.

Oh, OK. I've come across alot of terms I'm unfamiliar with since I found this board. "Cherry build" is another i've never heard of for describing building a vincent rifle out of Cherry.
If I were to describe that I would probably say some thing like "Vincent project" or something to that effect.
I've seen several others use the single term "build" when they discuss a gun construction project.
I'm not slamming you by any means, just curious about diffent terms i hear every now and then.
Probably just the differnce in geographic locations or something. :v

It is a hybrid style, and since I could think of no other.... I named the rifle "Cherry".
So I am building "Cherry", hence the moniker.
And I thought this constituted construction?

Yes, it is construction, this was not my point. The term "A build" is just not a term i had ever heard before. Like I said, just a curiosity, not a big deal in anyway.
Nothing wrong with a cherry Vincent either, you're doing a fine job too I might add.

Oh, now I see your point, I am new to this so I just used the term for building a bike or car.
I did not think anything of it. What would be the correct term? Construction or Project?
I suppose it must look strange, now that I know that the terminology was incorrect.
I am isolated in this hobby and have to learn everything on my own. (That would explain some of my screwball techniques)
This site has done wonders. :)

I don't know if the term is correct or incorrect, as I spend my life in a basement and only have contact with real people on a limited basis a couple times a year.... :haha:
I suspect it may just be a geographic term that is used in different parts of the country is all. Makes no differnce really as everybody knows what you're taliking about.
I really hi jacked your thread didn't I? Sorry about that! :v

Quiet you, or we won't toss down a slab of raw meat tonight for your supper. :nono:

My Father used to say: "Storm is a building" when weather was turning bad. :hmm: But then, he called soda "pop" and he'd yell at us to get our "feet off the davenport or leave the parlor", and we'd sit up on the couch and be looking all over the living room to see what that was.

Gosh...
And I thought that by "Cherry Build" you meant that this was your FIRST gun project... as in Cherry/Virgin.

I was like... man this guy is good for his first rifle! :rotf:

Keep up the good work, I am enjoying your explainations and photographs.
