Thank you, great read. I have what I think is a Cherry Corners Hawken rifle. Looks just like an Ithaca, no barrel stamps. Lock and triggers are stamped CherryCorners. Beautiful rifle.

Back in the late 70's early 80's, the Cherry Corners lock was considered to be the most correct lock to use for a J&S or Sam Hawken Plains rifle. These are very good locks. I used one to build my kind of - sort of Sam Hawken rifle from a large collection or pretty suitable parts. After about 15 years of fairly heavy use, the mainspring broke. I found that the L&R mainspring could be made to fit. The lock has a long throw, but with the strong mainspring, it is very fast. It will burst #10, 1075 or #11 caps with equal authority.

Do you by chance remember which L&R spring you used? I need to do this to my Cherry Corners lock.

I have a Hawken gun on here for sale made from a cherry corners lock and parts set with Douglas barrel.

It was the spring from the Late English percussion lock. I did have to drill a new hole for the locating pin

I used the full scale drawings in the Track of the Wolf's catalog to match spring size. Couldn't see the locating pin on the spring.

Thank you, I figured the spring pin would be different. Much appreciated!

Nothing' Hawken' about them but these are pets from my Battery.

Top is a 490 three grouved rifle I once caried through the mountains & rivers of British Columbia about 1973 a 12 day desent of the Mosley Homathka rivers .Only the old barrel wasnt my work. note' got up' India' local trade 'lock so many despise !. Spur guard & tool box where added to an old shotgun stock . Middle is my old Two Grouve for belted ball relic barrel but bore was still fine. Again a Cawnpore India local trade for Indian customers lock again ' got up, 'Stock blank a waister off the Dupli carver of NZ s Tony Hawkins I used to do development work for him & he put out a ' Hawken style 'if noddingly & down to a price rifle but still revered in NZ for his superb barrels. The cap box I added .Next a flint rifle got up from one of his waisters originaly with a ' Tony Hawkins ' second' 45 barrel in poor boy style & it served me many years in the US as my take down R Vouse event gun & was dubbed a 'New Zealand Poor boy 'if I added a 50 cal then a 54 cal The wooden tool box I added . All three have seen a lot of bush miles & Bowled the 'donkeys'& pigs (Red Deer classed as' pests' in NZ )The shoulder bag was new when I made it of light duck. . Below sits my snap matchlock another well used bush gun .And my Scots 'Herron Butt' 'English lock with Dog 'Old barrel so used 'cappucins ' brass bands rather than add loops for cross pins The short flint rifle is 50 cal 26" brl of 5 pounds weight . None of the others being much over six .The long ladder 490 has done well at 300 & 500 yards on a range the Two groove had a three leafed sight I made for it but is better with just it single standing sight .most game is short range & fleeting . Nobody gets up trees ..

Dear Smooth shooter .Thankyou, the 490 on that river trip fed on swaged TC Maxis so no possible fire risk & I did once use it muzzle down to probe to find a footing in a surging narrow creak .(needs must at times in big country )When I think of the snakes ,Wolverines, Mountain lions, Amourus Moose ,Bears varius coupled with hairy river & Slough crossings and glacial run off colder than ice. The ghosts of Waddingtons road crew seemed trifling on the scale of things . Didn't see any Sausquash but be a good place theyed like !nobody else in there. If Camdo logging based at Cumsac Creek might have got up towards Waddington Canyon by now . I went though twice but the other rifle was a 451 military match I made . Much as such are despoilers they where good to' set on 'get some fat back on & make a few $ & clean up until the snow stopped operations & the whole crew got float planed out . My most fun job was' Boom mans offsider' with cauked boots I ballanced on floating logs or 'Boom sticks' while I got them under a jig that bored a hole to attach a chain link to form a floating fence for truck loads to be dropped in to make a big raft. Then by full moon high tide we towed the lot to the head of Butte inlet & chained them to a big raft .Thats 50 odd years ago my how time fly's, But my memories are still vivid My last trip round Mt Waddington was by the Klina Klini river from the settlement of that name to the Knight Inlet I took an old16 bore ML shotgun ball in the left & small shot in the right barrel that was a 16 or so day passage to Hoodoo creek in full spate & came very close to ending my travels for good .That stuck in my memory very well .
Regards Rudyard
