Been looking around at chisels for relief carving and my head is kinda spinning with all the different profiles. Is there a "go to" gouge guage size that will make most of the concave cuts? Thanks for any input.

IMHO:
if you' re talking about removing waste wood from inside an inlet perimeter, the answer is maybe, but it won't be as efficient as having different sweeps and sizes at your use.

if you're talking about stabbing in an inlet perimeter, the answer is no, you'll really benefit from several different sweeps.

if you're referring to lowering the field around relief carving, again, could get away with one shallow sweep profile, but again efficiency would suggest a variety is useful.

At the end of the day, I think gouge choice on any of these tasks is really a personal preference and what ya feel comfortable with after trying a few things.

I ended up getting a small Flex Cut kit with an additional smaller gouge. I'll start with it and see how it goes. Thanks.

Wayne, best advice anybody can give ya is don't buy cheap!!! You will become so frustrated You will want to scream. save up what ya need money wise n get yerself decent quality tools. In the long run you will be so much happier. Learn how to sharpen everything n practice that alot. If yer tool ain't scary sharp, it ain't sharp enough.Practice on all sorts a different woods, flat, rounded, odd angles etc. until yer comfortable doing what ya intend on the stock. If ya have some of the same wood the stocks made out of all the better you'll get used to the feel of the wood as it cuts. TAKE YER TIME, GO SLOW, iF YA FEEL TIRED OR DISTRACTED PUT YER TOOLS DOWN N WALK AWAY FOR A BIT. Like Anything else-practice makes perfect-even though you will be able to see every flaw. Enjoy, carving can become addictive even if yer just whittling a stick fer fun --Just some thoughts YMHS Birdman
