OK I have read alot on this here and seen several great photo's and I want to try it. Some things are sketchy at best. For example,

is the mix sealed or open to the elements?

I see reference to steel wool, iron nails, etc.. wouldn't powdered iron or iron in a liquid form be better/quicker?

how much iron to how much vinegar for the mix?

ED Street I used old barb wire,you can probaly use other metal? I put mine in 3lb plastic flogers container.Big hand full wire cut to fit .Two cups white vinegar,punched holes in lid,its working away.I add vinegar if it is needed. There was apost about it a while back.One of members had a bunch of Qt jars with different combinations,you might be able to pull it up. Dilly

Ed ~ While I'm certainly not an authority on the subject, I can tell you that you do not want to seal the lid on your container.

The gases formed while the brew is "working" need to escape. The mason jar I use is old. It has a glass lid with a wrie ring to seal the lid. I leave that wire off the lid. I poured in the cider, tossed in about 12" inches of very old barbed wired coiled up enough to get it in the jar, and set it on my wife's plant stand. I look at it every now and again to make sure everything is ok.

You'll start to see some sludge build up on the botton of the jar. You'll also note a skim of junk on the surface. I take that off, stir the mixture and put it away for another week or so.

I can't answer your question about the iron powder. Just make sure you try it on some scraps, preferrsbly from the same wood as your stock, before you put it on the stock. Good luck!

I put 2 3in. strips of old rusty barb wire in jar with 1 cup of cider viniger. Lid is loose stir every couple of days . Till stop seeing bubbles . Brew is done [4 to 6 weeks].

OK I bought the 2 chemicals ferric nitrate and ferric chloride. been looking in the archives and discovered a few posts. will post results when it comes in and will be doing alot of testing first.

Besides I can always add things to the mix and let it sit for a period. Also going to get some lye.
