I started using Breakfree on M16s and M60s while I was in Army. When I retired in 1991, I kept using it on my personal weapons. I've always had good luck with it and have never had it gum up anything. I collect and shoot milsurp rifles and muzzleloaders and use it on all of them. I recently tried Ballistol after reading some good reviews of it on this forum. I checked my .62 Fowler a week after lubing the bore with Ballistol and found rust in it. Maybe I didn't quite get the bore dry after cleaning it warm soapy water. I used it again today after shooting my .40 North Carolina rifle. I'll check it in a couple days. If I find rust, I'm going back to Breakfree.

Don't know which you are using, but I always use the non-aerosol Ballistol in the bores, as it is much thicker & seems to protect it better. And I ALWAYS come back the 2nd & 3rd day & reswab the bores on my ML's after cleaning them.

Also, if you cleaned with Ballistol, the rust you found later my be rust that was already hidden there & the Ballistol displaced some of it.

On thing you darn sure don't want to do, use Ballistol on a freshly browned barrel. It will start removing the browning right away !

I used BreakFree for years. It is good stuff for sure. I still use it on the modern guns & especially the SS ones.

Birddog, I'm using the aerosol Ballistol. I'll try and find some non-aerosol somewhere. I ordered the aerosol from TOTW. I haven't seen any for sale in the Houston area. You may be right about the rust. I haven't given up yet on the Ballistol.

I buy mine straight from Ballistol. I buy it by the case & also in gallon cans, as I use it all the time in the shop to prevent rust & corrosion on metal parts of machinery & diesel engine components. The non-aerosol I put in 16 oz pump bottles from Wal-mart. When I build a compressor, every part inside is sprayed with Ballistol & then sealed up. I can take one off the shelf 2-3 years later & open it up & not a speck of rust anyplace. Now keep in mind it is bead blasted clean inside first, but NONE have rusted to date & I have been doing this with Ballistol for about 8-9 years. It has worked for this better than Anything I have ever used. Same thing on cyl. heads, water pumps, engine blowers, pistons, rods, etc.

And on all of the rifle barrels, locks, triggers I get in, I coat them well with it, wrap the barrels in shrink wrap & the lock & triggers go into ziplocks. I can get one out 5 years later & it looks just like I got it from the barrel maker or lockmaker, brand spankin new.......

I use the Aerosol for locks, penetrating oile, etc. I carry a can of it in each truck & when I go on a job, it goes too. I just love the stuff.

Oh, and it is da// good wife or girlfriend repellant too ! You hear them coming toward the door of the shop, just spray some thru the door entrance & they get a wiff of it & they will turn around & go the other way !! :rotf: :rotf:

Trust me, Birddog6's cleaning method works...I am glad he shared it with me

Ballistol is a waste of money & time. Water soluable oil is a waste of time. Breakfree is excellent. Olive oil is better.

take the lock off. put it the bucket of cold/warm water. Use a patch with the water to clean the bore.
Tip the rifle so the water runs out the vent liner.
do until clean. wipe off the lock.
use a light mineral oil on the lock and bore.
Done in 10min tops.
Of course I am going to shoot the weapon in a couple of days, now that the weather is perfect

Olive oil is better.
Hmmm. An intriguing idea. Seriously. I'd be bit concerned about long storage though. Olive oil will evaporate into a very sticky/tacky residue over time. What has been your experience with this?
Regarding cost effectiveness and Ballistol: I don't know that Ballistol is competitive in price with olive oil (very interesting idea, that) but it is way less expensive than Break-Free (Ballistol = $8.69/16 ounces; BF = $24/16 ounces).

What an insightful post from 'God's Waiting Room' (Florida) ...

Ballistol works ... and works well! So if you don't like it - don't use it, but keep it 'real' ... :surrender:

I too use Breakfree CLP, and find both have their purpose.

I just hate to see folks waste their money.
Please explain further. I use Ballistol (for years) and it works. Given the cost differential cited above, it is a way better buy.
What was your experience with Ballistol that causes you to dislike it so? (Inquiring minds want to know). I'm not arguing with you, Mark, but you've been scanty with the details.
I'm still very curious about the olive oil thing. And vegetable oil? Canola? Corn? If the one works, why not the others.
When you have a moment.

The Swampman....AKA Mark Lewis has a case of Verbal Diarrhea most times of the day or night.Doctor (or himself for that matter) have no explanation for some of the things he says.... :youcrazy:

Any vegetable oil, is better than mineral oil.

You are paying good money for mineral oil & water.

Our forefathers didn't use mineral oil & water. They did use olive oil.

"The Swampman....AKA Mark Lewis has a case of Verbal Diarrhea most times of the day or night"

Now that's funny. I don't care what anybody says...Lord forgive me and take care of the Pigmys in Africa....

Either will work. If I keep adding folks to my ignore list, it's gonna get full.

This fellow asked about cleaning. Olive oil/balistol isn't for cleaning. Tepid water, Windex, or windshield washer fluid are for cleaning.

I know better than to get involved in this, Lord help me for this...

If I keep adding folks to my ignore list, it's gonna get full.

At the rate your going, wont be long you'll be talking to yourself round here.

I have never had a problem with Break Free gumming up on any firearm, BP or otherwise. Been using it for years... use whatever works well for you.

With any oil/lube, use a "judicious" amount after cleaning. Too much of anything can create issues. Also, make sure you get out as much of the moisture as you can before lubing.

My 3 cents.
