Can't take credit for it...learned it on another Forum a few years ago.
An additional step you can take after removing the barrel is to lay a broom handle in the barrel bed, tie it in place with a couple strips of old towel or something...
 
I lay the gun muzzle lower than the breech with the vent over a towel. Run wet bore mops or patches up the bore and allow the water to drain out the muzzle. I have a rifle I have never pulled the barrel off the stock (made in 2005) and had a Bess I pulled once in 15 years . . . and decided that was unnecessary.
 
While I plug the vent hole I also wrap paper towels around the area to soak up any water that seeps through.
