Cleaned my Muzzle loader for first time used TC #13 Black Powder cleaner in bore and nipple 10 patches then Balllistol 6 patches then Rem Oil 2 patches for bore. I took nipple out used above products and pipe cleaners and Q-tips in and under nipple and channel. I hope this is good I don't want rust. Thanks Yes I am a newbe to all of this.

Give it a couple or three days and run another patch or two down the bore and see what you get. It will tell you if that was sufficient.

Doc

You have to clean all that oil out before you shoot it the next time,, oil and burning powder turns into a hard tar like deposit in the flash channel and bore.
This could be part of the trouble in your other topic about miss fires.
Rubbing or denatured alcohol will rinse the oil out,, a couple patches wet with alcohol or even pouring some in and sloshing around will do the job.

Glad to hear you didn't have a bad experience with #13 like I did.

For me, using the #13 cleaner created instant rust.
The bore rusted before I could even get a clean wiping patch down thru it.
Never again will I even allow that stuff in my house.

I think after a bit of shooting and cleaning, you'll find that plain old water works just as well as any of the modern "bore cleaners".

If you've been shooting something with any kind of oil or grease on it, adding a few drops of dish washing detergent to the water will be all that's needed to clean the gun.

Besides fully drying the bore, perhaps the most important thing to do is to apply a good anti-rust gun oil to the barrel.

I like Barricade but there are other good products that will work OK.

When you are oiling the barrel remember, if any of the oil runs down inside the small hole in the breech, it will lay there waiting to contaminate the new powder charge the next time you load.

Oil in the powder will prevent it from igniting so be careful about using too much.

Actually, many shooters store their guns with the muzzle pointing down.
They do this to keep any excess oil from collecting in the breech and in the hole that connects the breech to the nipple (or vent).

Have fun.

Thanks for all the tips guys. If I clean barrel the day before I go hunting with rubbing Alcohol and clean the oil out will I be ok to load gun go hunting and not worry about rust for a week ?

I would say no.

Alcohol will remove all traces of oil from the surface and it really needs to have some protection.

If you totally clean the bore with alcohol, lightly dampen a clean cleaning patch with a good gun oil.
Not wet. Just damp.

Run it down the bore a few times to be sure the bore has some protection. Then go ahead and load the gun and it should be good to go.

One of the nice things about Barricade is it is not only an excellent protector against rust, but it drys too.

The microscopic thick, dry layer of Barricade totally protects the metal and it does not need to be removed before using the gun.

The only problem with Barricade is the maker refuses to put the "California has determined that looking at or touching this product will destroy you and all of your children", or whatever the warning is, on the product.

That's why folks in California can't buy Barricade. :shake:

Stoy, What I will do if I'm going hunting is wipe the bore with alcohol prior to loading ,then load the gun and "unless you live in an area with high humidity" I normally do not worry about rust that day. If I don't get a shot and plan on hunting the next day I will run a oily patch down the bore on top of the load.Just make sure it's not too wet. A couple swipes up & down and you're good to go.Remember to wipe the oil out of the bore prior to shooting or you will get into the issues that Necchi spoke of. I have used Barricade for along time now and have had no issues with it or rust.

Chicken Noodle for me Please  :haha:

I clean with water (and a little dish soap if really dirty), dry well and grease with bear oil/grease.

I use luke warm water and G96 for my guns too. It's never let me down.

There's several ways to clean a firearm. I tend to run a bore size bore mop loaded with solvent down barrel and let it sit for 10min of so. Then I run several patches down it till they come out clean. Then I run a dry bore mop down it and a patch with a thin coating of TOTW Mink Oil which is also my patch lube down bore before storing it. I also rub entire gun down with it before storing it. Check after a few days but have never had any issues.
