I wouldn't use WD $0 on anything where I couldn't flush it away/ Getting it into a rifle bolt would be a good place to avoid using it.

My enquiry into the the composition of steel which will allow the metal to become saturated with WD 40 and block any water molecules to seep in there or BP residue for that mater is what got me using my method

Last time I checked my barrels before giving my rifles to my grandson they were clean as a whistle with no rust or corrosion after quite a few years in Humid St/ Louis.

I am pretty happy with WD-40 for what I use it for.

After cleaning I will swab down the bore and then wipe the barrel down with it. Sometimes I use it for the moving parts in the lock. Prefer 3-1 or a spray can of Rem-oil for that use.

Never had any gunk issues with WD-40, but then I never put much on the gun and I tend to shoot them often enough that the oil won't gum up.

I really like it. Good stuff.

ever try 'marvel mystery oil' after drying from cleaning?
warm/hot or even cold soapy water will remove fouling, however I use windshield washer fluid winter mix in a small spray bottle.
going back to the frontier days they used water - heated if available- then dry over fire and the bear/goose/buffalo/beaver fat wipe down. seemed to serve them well enough.

I know what ya put in yer gun at clean up does matter. I had a 30-30 as a kid and got it back when pop passed (we had traded). It jammed all the time (Win 94 lever action). My gunsmith buddy took it to repair said all he did was CLEAN it. I always squirted WD-40 every where. Seems after 40 years it may have gummed up?

SOOOO now I clean locks with carb cleaner and use 3-1 or rem oil in an aerosol can. Had a few for 30 years so they due to "gum up". BUT it worked so far, my locks are all working as designed after squirtin WD. Just a change to rem-oil or a few drops of 3-1 now for me.

Gotta understand, though, that 18th century windshield washer fluid was a little different from what we use today. :stir: :rotf:
