When I get home from the shooting range, I always clean my guns. Usually this means putting some water down the barrel and leaning it against the house with a rag protecting the muzzle. Yesterday I made a stand out of some scrap 2x4s I had laying around. I need to add another notch for my rod.

You did a mighty fine job on making your stand, do you care if I might copy your idea? I like that.

Hi Mike your right you need more noches for sure. One gun isn't enough expecially when it looks like my gun. Nice work know you will get lots of use out of it.

Copy away. I had several ideas for the butt rest. Of course the simplest was the best.

Good looking stand and rifle! How many goats to keep that lawn short?

Good concept, but I usually clean with water and it would leak down into the stock; either from overslosh around the muzzle or escape from the vent. I lay mine flat, slightly muzzle down, with the lock removed and the vent facing down onto some old towels.

Nice work, though.

:hatsoff:

Looks very nice and fine work done. Great.

Nice rifle too and I like the colour match.

Just laying around that wood??? :v

Wood scraps laying around from a bathroom remodel two years ago. Stain was new. You can tell there were different pieces of wood by the way it took stain.

Suggestion: glue a little leather to the notch. Otherwise over time the barrel will show some wear at the point of contact. Dont ask how I know. Good smoke, Ron in FL

The other problem with such fixed stands is where to store them, when not in use. I suggest you consider storing it on a wall hook, like Shaker furniture, but with the base of the stand up high, and the sides of the stand against the wall. The last thing you will want to tolerate is that stand taking up valuable floor space when you are not using it.

You may also want to put a hing on both vertical posts of the stand, at the bottom, attached to short sections of 2 x 4 material to give you better side legs. That keeps the stand from being knocked over easily when the gun(s) is on the rack. Just put a foot on the bottom of the extension- a 4 x 4 section of 2 x works, and then mount the hing to the vertical post the same distance above the ground as foot is wide. Use a hook and eye arrangement to hold the extension lock in place. Use another hood and eye on the end of the extension to hold it to the sides of the post when folded up.

Paint the feet and legs of the stand with blaze orange paint to put people on notice of its width.

What ever works for ya I say. I just leave the stand outside. No need for storage.

well, I'm going to borrow your idea for the base, exactly what I need, when I shoot at the range I use, I have to lean my GPR against either a concrete table or a plywood one to load or clean the barrel. They both work good, kinda, if I am not careful when I use the plywood one, my rifle will slide one way or another and is unsteady. When I use the concrete one, it is really rough (as concrete usually is) and it will scratch my barrel. They have pieces of carpet on the tables but when I use the carpet on the concrete table it becomes slick and my gun goes into the sliding mode again. I'll make just a base like yours to sit the butt of my gun on and a plywood piece to sit on the table with either a notch like yours or two pieces of plywood to hold my gun in place. Either way, I like your design and thanks for sharing. Harold

I've used it a few times now and the stand is working quite well for me. It has been very stable and makes it easier to work on the gun because I'm able to go 360 around the stand. I still need to add another notch for my cleaning rod.
