Thanks for posting those Fred.

The 1849 Colt in its various configuration actually outsold the 1851 even though the 1851 was bought by the Military.
There were over 325,000 of them made at the Hartford factory and another 11,000 were made at the London factory.

It is a .31 caliber pistol with either a 5 or 6 shot cylinder. They came with 3", 4", 5" and 6" barrels, most with loading levers and some without.
According to Flayderman's Guide, in order to have an example of each variation in your collection you would have to have over 200 pistols!

The 1849 Colt was manufactured from 1850 thru 1873.

Z i didnt get them up I was back in hospital but telme isnt the 62 Navy and Police the same frame ect but for the 36 cal? Some of the 49s are just wild looking, some even with round barrels if what the Colt book said is right, one was a 1 and 1/2" barrel hide out for some company, most of these are made in GB factory why I dont know, like you said over 200 kinds make's collecting a real dream/nightmare??? :rotf: would love to have a few dozen. The big gun shop here with over 500 colt BPs on the wall has some real neat ones (where I got that one pic long ago of the flint Hawken he dont allow pics but has a case set ith all 4 barrels that looks really trick. Got to run. Fred :hatsoff:

Well Fred, I don't have measured drawings of the 1849 and 1862 Police so I'll have to point out the differences on the Italian reproductions. This is comparing a 1862 Police made by Uberti (1977) to a 5 3/4 inch long barreled 1849 SanMarco (1964) so take my measurement comparison for what you think it's worth.

The frame, measured from the vertical surface at the rear of the frame (where the grip starts) on the 1862 is .120 longer than the '49.
This is to accomodate the longer cylinder on the 1862 Police. The cylinders measure 1.590 long on the 1862 and 1.455 long on the 1849.

The frame thickness measured at same vertical rear of the frame is .040 thicker on the 1862.

The length of the grip on the 1862 is about 1/16 longer than the '49.

The biggest difference between the two is the fact that the 1862 Police has a rebated cylinder to handle the larger .36 caliber chambers and the frame had to have a cut made in it to clear this larger diameter cylinder.

Now if you members want to contribute to my Colt collection with your donations, I'll start looking for a couple of real Colts just so I can give you some better measurements.
zonie :)

"the 1862 Police has a rebated cylinder to handle the larger .36 caliber chambers " Right and thanks for the info on size , if you'll go to the B+W photo with the Trapper on it the one below is a Police with Navy cyl ,just love that 2"barrel and plain cyl on a police, why couldnt he have just made some 36 cal 49s?? oh ya all ofthese arent 49s in the pic 2 I think are 62s....proto's without the frame cut and cyl change maybe? your going to make me dig deeper now, anyway just ideas for things to do with your old stockers, - you should see a 2" barrel Rem with some of the brass frame off and a real sight up front its a knck out, and I didnt have a camera, will take one to one of the best BP gun shows around TX today just in case. Fred :hatsoff:

OH the point was the 62 Navy with cut barrel is about a 36 cal 49 or a neat looking Police still pocket Colts, but the 49s do stand alone on how they look for sure, Fred :hatsoff: ( I'd rather have a 49 but for the 36 cal part.)
