Dont want anyone to think that coneing hasnt worked, the one John T did in his mch shop seems to be dead on as always ( SF Hawken ) and I did one with a rotory file wraped in cloth as shown in a copy of MUZ Blast and at best I lost a 1/4 to 1/2 " at 50 yds and got instant loading with that 2nd one, great for hunting!! The accuracy of a coned barrel is only as accurate as the smith that did the coning. A cone is just a longer taper of a crown job. They both have to be square with the bore. The coned rifle is easier to load with tight load combinations. I think that the modern crowning of the muzzle is just a lot easier to do on a lathe. Quick and easy while barrel is chucked up. I have not seen original rifle barrels with a crown but I have seen many with a coned muzzle and the faux rifling then was hand filed in.
