I don’t have technically nipple grease. I do have a can of the standard industrial copper colored anti seize . Would it be fine to use it on the nipple threads and set screw plug hole ? I would think so. But thought I’d ask. Yeah the crap is messy if you’re not careful. But I have it already. Thanks WarDawg.

I use it on b/plug threads now instead of Neverseez. It's been working just fine on '40 packard cyl. head studs for me for years now and they go into the water jacket. Think of it as a copper bearing version of neverseize, and we do after all, dump water down out barrels. Unless someone comes up with a plausable horrific reason why it shouldn't be used I'm going to continue using it.

I use this stuff breech plugs and nipples, it never washes off and does a great job, the copper is the same suff.

felpro c5a was developed for NASa copper base. used it on aircraft hardware, use on nipples, lock screws, flint clamp. little goes long ways. be sure to clean fingers before handling other parts. lok-tight makes it now . apply with toothpick mike
I use either tooth pick or cotton swab to apply it.

White lithium grease has always worked for me. The trick is to loosen the nipples after you're finished shooting and prior to cleaning. Btw, it's not nearly as messy as anti seize. Lastly, white lithium or assembly grease (e.g. Park's) works much better than anti seize when I install (or remove) pedals on my bicycles.

Is this necessary? I’ve never put anything on my nipple or cleanout plug but a bit of gun oil with Teflon.
Is it? Is gun oil with Teflon necessary? I have gun oil. I have Teflon tape. The high temperature properties of the copper anti seize is what I had on hand. Other choices? Sure. But I’ve read of nipples locked up. Was it heat through combustion causing it, or rust from lack of proper maintenance. I don’t know. I just thought the C A S compound addressed the possible issues that could arise. You may find your choice does the same. I would call it a case of being terribly blessed. Too many choices.

I definitely wasn’t being critical, I genuinely want to know because maybe I should be doing more and I thought with all the experience in this forum I’d get a consensus of what I should be doing. My cleanout plug does go in awful easy and even wiggles slightly and at times I thought, could that plug go flying out of there?
But don’t want to highjack your thread,, pardon me, carry on👍

My understanding is that Copper anti seize will withstand hi temps better than the aluminum one.

You miss understand me. But I was sincere. For future reference for me and others, let us know the results of what you used. Good, bad or indifferent, win-win.

Agreed Doc, I think you just need a non liquid lube of any kind to prevent fouling from back-pressure from climbing up the threads while you shoot. I bought a chapstick tube of Traditions anti-seize when I got started. Probably a rip in price, but it's handy and will last a long time for nipples. I am guessing that the waxier the consistency of whatever one chooses, the better. SW
