I am starting a walnut stocked 28 gauge fowler and I would assume it takes a 54 ball. My friend says no, there isn't any rifling to take up the extra patch material.
What is the correct size of ball for this gauge?
the patch box is for a diffent rifle
I was so excided to get the box, I had to take a few pics

I have a .54cal/.28ga GM Flint smoothbore....530's are the balls suggested for it...I use a snug fitting Hornady .530 & .015" patch combination...get rifle like accuracy at the 50yds I sighted it in at.

I am going to have to get a new mold. That's OK.
How does your 28 gauge kick?
One of the resons this is a 28 is I fired a 20, it was a new england style fowler and it kicked like a mule, jumped like a 03 straight stock springfield and my thumb came up and hit me right in the eye :cursing:
I don't mind a hard recoil, if the stock is designed to push it into your shoulder, not up into your face

I have a Renegade .56 cal smoothbore which is a hair bigger than 28 gauge and I shoot 1oz shot and 70gr FFg and I don't feel any recoil at all.

I also have a 20 bore NWTG and I use 70gr FFFg and I don't feel any recoil from it either.

Sounds like someone was loading that 20 bore pretty hot.

Recoli is nothing...15/16" x 33" GM Flint barrel in a TC Hawken stock...70grns Goex 3F, Oxyoke wad, .015" patch, Hornady .530...shot a couple of 40-50 shot range sessions with it last fall when I got it to so I'd be sure I had it set up OK before deer season opened;

Shot load is 70grns Goex 3F, Two Oxyoke wads, 1+1/8oz #6's, .28ga Circle Fly OS card.

well,
I didn't see what the load was, just what the happened after.
I am going to have to ask what he put in her :hmm:

I've not ever found the recoil to be uncomfortable on a 20 bore gun. The problem you were experiencing was due to an improperly built gun. The drop and the roman nose of that particular gun didn't suit you , and with a properly built gun that fit you you wouldn't have any trouble at all.

I have two 28g SB's by the same builder. In one a .535 ball with a .015 patch is none too tight and the other a .527 with a .010 patch is a very tight fit. Probaby best to try several combos.

I use a .520 ball and a .015 patch in my Spanish 28 gauge and it's plenty snug and shoots better than anything else. (modified choke)
The .530 ball just didn't shoot well and was way too tight with the same patch.
I wonder if there's standard tolerance differences between U.S. and Spanish/European barrels?

My smoothrifle likes a .520 rb with a 20 thou's patch lubed with bears oil. Being there is no rifling to accept any patch, I can't oversize anything. If I use a .530 rb and a 10 thou's patch, it is a very, very tight fit. If I use an 12 thou's thick patch ans a .530 ball, I couldn't get the ball and patch down the barrel, even with a mallet !! By using a smaller ball and thicker patch, it loads perfect as the patch has some thickness to compress with the pressure of the loading of the ball. It saves alot of headaches in the field ......
