gents:
could someone supply a snapshot of a cow's knee? I need to go 'build' something like now as it is snowing and I am dying to go huntin'! thanks

Google it and search images. Gotta keep it covered in PA this week. Calling for 4 to 8" here tonight and more Saturday. I won't get a chance to get out til Saturday because of work and I can't find my cows knee either. I have some large peices of scrap leather I can rig something up.

Best of luck to ya, and welcome to the forum.

I'll quote Allan Eckert's book "The Frontiersman", in which Simon Kenton is hunting for his trapping camp..."They jumped a large turkey gobbler with plumage so wet it elected to run rather than fly. Simon swiftly jerked away the oil-heavy opossum hide wrapped around the lock of Jacob (his rifle) to keep the powder dry and threw the weapon to his shoulder, firing instantly."

So if it's any help to you, and I am a helpful guy, I can probably pick up a truck-struck possum tomorrow morning and overnight it to you, freight due. Naturally, you'd also wind up with snacks for New Year's football games too.

Let me know.

I'm dealing with rain mostly rather than snow, but here's a lesson I learned about making my own:

You want it to fit in the front to help limit the path of water running down the barrel toward the lock. It's easy to say "Keep your muzzle down," but the fact is that in rough terrain your muzzle is going to be up most of the time simply to keep mud out of the muzzle. Climb any hill and slip with the muzzle down, and you better have a plan for removing mud plugs from the bore. Same for snow plugs, I'm here to tell you.

Longrifle 78, Your last picture looks more like a camel toe, than a cow's knee, LOL

Nice to know I have company down here in the gutter..... :hatsoff:

Have you tried looking at Mark Bakers first book. It has a real easy pattern for a knee and was very easy to make. Soaked mine in neatsfoot oil and it works real well. I think the book is called "A Pilgrims Journey"

I'll second this pattern! :applause:

It's super easy, and can be finished in about 15 minutes or so.

It's on page 12 of A Pilgrims Journey VOL:1.
