This custom underhammer .36 is totally unmarked as to maker. It is a well made rifle that appears to have been in storage for a long time. The heavily browned 33"x15/16" barrel had some light oxidation that came off easily and blended with original finish. The muzzle had been plugged with an oiled piece of cloth that had completely dried out. This left an area of oxidation extending about 1.5" into bore. Scrubbing it left a light grain that the green light exagerates. Some more scrubbing and shooting should smooth it out. Rest of bore looks bright and shiny. Twist seems to be 1:48ish (3/4 turn in 33"). Receiver also had some light rust that cleaned up fine. Action was sticky, but a squurt of WD40 took care of that. Probably could use a deeper cleaning. Stocks are good plus. There is a small, stable hairline crack on right side behind receiver. LOP is 13 3/8". Weighs 10.3 lbs. $375 + Shipping.

Beautiful.

What’s the story on these underhammers? What were they used for, and by whom? Thanks!
I am NO expert for sure but I've always read that they were New England rifles used for target shooting. All I DO KNOW is they are easy to carry in the woods, ambidextrous and a hell of a lot of fun to shoot!!!!! Yeah, I kinda got hooked on them ever since my first one. 😇 Thanks to bigskyrambler for helping to feed my addiction hahaha. Great to deal with👍
