Thanks for all the replies. Basically I was just curious if anyone was making their own parts or using readily available parts. I must say that I am a bit surprised that there are not any makers producing their own parts.

I am not saying anything bad about any makers, I just figured that maybe some of them might make parts even something such as stocks or something. It is good to hear that there are plenty of high quality parts available for building these rifles.

What "parts" specifically are you referring too?

Most builders I know do as the early smiths did. They buy their barrels and locks and start with a block of wood.

Their mounts start as rough brass castings that are hand filed. Things like ramrod pipes, triggers, lugs, etc. are made by hand.

The belief that most early American and colonial 'smiths hammered out their own barrels, made their own locks and poured their own brass mounts is largely romance.

The guy specializing in stocking guns for a living can get a lot more done by leaving some things to others. Enjoy, J.D.

In all aspects of firearms, I've noticed there are three kinds of people. The ones who can work with metal, the ones who can work with wood, and finally the "Artist" that can make wood and metal come together, to form something that very few could ever do. I think an Artist that knows their limits, are the best.

Sure there are a lot of parts available, more than ever before. But some builders still make at least some of their parts. All of the rifles I've built have at least one homemade part. I get a lot of satisfaction in having as many handmade parts as possible on them.
