I have come across someone selling a 1851 Navy .44 CVA replica he said was built in 1969. The owner said there is a minor chip in the grip but there is nothing that negatively affects the pistol. He is asking $125.00. I have not seen the pistol in person and the photo I saw is not the greatest. Aren't these pistols less than $200.00 new? Does anyone have any idea what one might be worth and is it something worth getting? I do not know the first thing about cap and ball or muzzleloading pistols.

If you do not know the person you do run the risk of getting a piece of junk. Also if you knew the person and could try it out then it would be a good deal. For less than $100 more you can get a new one with a warranty.
Cabela's have one for $209 and they have a good track record for returnable items.
1851 cap n ball
Also Texas Jack's have a 36 cal. for $219 and that is made by Uberti. I have a 1858 Remmington that I bought from them and love it.
Texas Jacks super sale
:v

I agree, for the price I would (and have) gone with Cabelas. They come from Pietta in Italy and mine are quality.
They also sell them at some of the sporting goods stores as a kit minus the powder and caps.

I appreciate your advice. I did some checking on various prices and reached the same conclusion.

Markco5,here's my two cents.if you want brass go to www.thegunworks.com they have a cva 51 navy brass for $120 new.If you want steel go to texas jacks $219 for an uberti that is a good price.I have both uberti and pietta both are good. But the uberti's are good wright out of the box ready to fire. The pietta's sometimes need a little tweaking.Murf

Gee my three Piettas were good to go day one.

And I've heard Ubertis were sometimes rough.

Guess production lines have good days and bad days too.

My Pietta 1860 was good to go out of the box, zero problems. (Bought it from Cabela's last September or August).

Take it easy guys, my two pietta 1860 armys are great guns dont get me wrong. but i think the uberti's fit and finnish are better most of the time.If i had to chose one it would be uberti, but some times it can be hit and miss.I think most of you will agree that if you had to pick two brands it would be uberti and pietta.Murf :hatsoff:

Don't get all head up, Murf.

Nothin' personal, just goin' on my own experience.

I'm sure that quality is comparable between uberti and pietta, just as I'm sure that in every thousand arms made you'll find a klunker.

No offense.....just chattin

Legion no hard feelins, just giving my two cents on what i have found with both companys.I did have an uberti 1862 police that need some cleaning up.i do think pietta has gotten better with there quality control over the years.Murf
