I recently put together an old CVA "Colonial" Pistol Kit that a Friend has had lying around for years. I was wondering what charges I should expect to shoot out of it. It is a .45 caliber and I will be using KIK FFG because that is what I have. Anyone else have one that they shoot? It has a fairly short barrel and I was wondering how they shoot.
Thanks,

Hi,

I don't have the Colonial but have seen them shot by a couple of guys. I would start with a load of about 20 grains of powder and work up from there. I have a CVA Kentucky and Plains pistol in .50 cal and they prefer Pyrodex RS. Both are accurate and a pleasure to shoot. One fella who had the Colonial told me that he had to file the rear sight down to almost nothing because of the small brass front sight. I don't know if you have the same sight arrangment. Good luck with it and don't hesitate to post any questions you might have.

Don,
Yeah..it has the small brass front sight. An unusual shape, I think. Just a piece of 1/8" brass bar stock filed to a triangle shape, seems you could get a real fine bead with it but if your eyesight is poor it would be real easy to lose. Thanks for the replies.

Hello Idaho PRB,

Gongrats on your new gun. just thought I would share with my CVA Colonial . I was my first kit gun and my first flintlock. I put it together in 1977 . I have had more fun with it than any of the guns I own. Its the first gun my ten year old sons ever shot. I use FFF and 20 to 40 Grains with a PRB . Just for fun (And showing of for some coworkers at tha range last Saturday we were at the 100 yard rifle range), Free handed standing up with one arm I just pointed and shot at the 100 yard target and hit the 7 ring on a 100 yard rifle target :shocked2: . By the way my front sight fell off the second time I shot it. (I should have souldered it) :hmm: I almost fell over !! I'll never do that again in my life!!! In my pic above the pistol you will see my new sight I am goung to install soon. Good luck with yours . http://members.aol.com/rocketman58/gun/cvacolonial Jim1911
